Do you often feel exhausted despite having established a balanced routine and healthy life habits? You may not be implimenting every kind of rest you need.

1. Physical Rest

Our body tells us when it needs physical rest (feelings of weakness, yawning, sleepiness). Don’t get into the habit of ignoring these signals. It’s important to perform activities that allow us to take a break and restore our bodies.

Examples

PassiveActive
Have a good night’s sleepDo a yoga session
Take a little napBook a massage

2. Cognitive Rest

The importance of cognitive rest is often underestimated. Our brains are always on. We’re thinking about what we’re doing in the moment, what’s in this week’s meal plan, what we wanna do next weekend, etc. In order to ease up, we can incorporate activities that give our mind space.

Examples

  • Write in a journal
  • Practice mindfulness
  • Take short breaks during the day to do the small tasks that are distracting us

3. Sensory Rest

How much time do you spend in front of a screen in a day? For your eye health, and especially for your mental health, try to stay away from screens as much as you possibly can.

Examples

  • Take short breaks away from your screen
  • Close your eyes for a few minutes throughout the day
  • Don’t use your phone in bed

4. Creative Rest

Taking creative breaks will allow you to replenish your creativity. These activities give your brain the opportunity to “breathe”.

Examples

  • Take a walk outside and soak in nature’s beauty
  • Do a puzzle
  • Try something new

5. Emotional Rest

Do you feel an intense need to please others? Instead, try making an effort to spend time with authentic friends, with whom you can be open and express yourself freely.

6. Social Rest

Do you always feel exhausted after a social activity? Don’t be afraid to say “no” when you feel the need to rest. More importantly, make sure you surround yourself with positive people who make you feel energized and supported.

7. Spiritual Rest

Wanting to be a part of something is a basic human need. Being part of something bigger than us gives us a sense of belonging.

Examples

  • Feed your soul by connecting to your environment
  • Meditate
  • Spend time in nature
  • Pray
  • Volunteer in your community, etc.
